A Day in Stowe Village: Your Guide to Main Street

Only have a few hours to spend in Stowe? One of the questions we hear most often at our Visitor Information Center is, "We're here for the day. What should we do?" For visitors arriving by tour bus, exploring without a car or simply looking to spend a day on foot, Stowe's historic village is a wonderful place to start.

At the heart of town, Stowe Village is filled with locally owned shops, art galleries, restaurants and historic landmarks, all within walking distance of one another. It's the perfect place to spend a morning, an afternoon or an entire day exploring, with plenty of opportunities to discover the people, places and businesses that make our community special.

Of course, there's so much more to Stowe beyond Main Street, and we always encourage visitors to explore everything the surrounding area has to offer. But if you're looking to make the most of your time in the village, we've gathered a few of our favorite stops to help you plan your day. Follow along for the full experience or pick and choose the places that catch your eye.

Start with Coffee & Breakfast

Every great day starts with coffee, and Black Cap Coffee & Bakery is a local favorite for good reason. Located right on Main Street, this cozy café serves specialty coffee drinks, freshly baked pastries and breakfast sandwiches to fuel your day of exploring. Grab a maple latte for a little taste of Vermont, settle in for breakfast or take your coffee to go as you head out into the village.

If you're looking for a sit-down breakfast spot, Barbarian Restaurant is just a short walk from Main Street. It's a great option for starting your day with a hearty meal before setting out to explore the village.

Discover Stowe's Arts & History

Just a short walk from Main Street, The Current is a great place to experience Stowe's creative side. Located in the historic Helen Day Memorial Building alongside the Stowe Free Library, this contemporary art center features rotating exhibitions showcasing work from local, national and international artists. Admission to the galleries is free, making it an easy addition to your day.

History enthusiasts can also visit the nearby Stowe Historical Society, where exhibits and artifacts offer a glimpse into the town's past. The museum has limited operating hours, so be sure to check ahead before stopping in.

As you make your way back toward Main Street, don't miss Stowe Community Church. With its iconic white steeple rising above the village, it's one of Stowe's most recognizable and photographed landmarks. The historic church is a beautiful example of classic New England architecture and a must-see stop for first-time visitors.

Explore Local Art & Craftsmanship

Stowe's creative spirit extends beyond its galleries and into the shops that line Main Street. Stop into The Northwood Gallery to discover artwork and handcrafted goods made exclusively by Vermont artists, including pottery, jewelry, photography and more.

On the other end of Main Street, Simon Pearce offers beautifully crafted glassware and home goods that celebrate timeless design and craftsmanship. It's a wonderful place to browse for a special gift or discover something unique to bring home.

For handcrafted art, jewelry and distinctive gifts, make time for Remarkable Things, another favorite stop in the village.

Break for Lunch

After a morning of exploring, it's time for a bite to eat. Right on Main Street, The Avocado Pit is a great option for a casual lunch featuring fresh, customizable bowls, burritos and other favorites. It's a convenient stop in the heart of the village, so you can refuel before heading back out to explore.

Just a short walk from Main Street, you'll find even more great places to grab lunch. Backyard is a laid-back local favorite serving up burgers, sandwiches and pub-style fare, while Ranch Camp offers a creative menu of burritos, tacos and other fresh, flavorful dishes. Both are great options for enjoying a meal before continuing your village adventure.

Shop Your Way Through Main Street

No visit to Stowe Village is complete without spending some time browsing its locally owned shops. Start at Shaw's General Store, a longtime Main Street staple offering everything from clothing and outdoor essentials to gifts and Vermont souvenirs.

Book lovers will want to stop into Bear Pond Books, an independent bookstore filled with thoughtfully selected titles, while Stowe Mercantile offers an assortment of Vermont-made products, specialty foods, home goods and gifts.

If you're shopping with little ones, Once Upon a Time Toys is a must-visit for games, puzzles and toys that inspire creativity and play. There's no need to rush from one shop to the next. Part of the fun is discovering what catches your eye along the way.

Treat Yourself to Something Sweet

An afternoon in Stowe calls for something sweet, and Lake Champlain Chocolates is the perfect place to indulge. Browse gourmet chocolates and Vermont-made treats, enjoy an ice cream or warm up with a rich hot cocoa, depending on the season.

While you're there, don't forget to snap a photo with the colorful Stowe mural, a fun keepsake from your visit. Art lovers can also pop into The Bryan Fine Art Gallery next door to browse an impressive collection of paintings and fine art.

Raise a Glass to Stowe

After a full day of exploring, slow things down with a glass of wine from Ellison Estate Vineyard. This Vermont staple offers locally produced wines, bringing another taste of the Green Mountain State to your village experience.

Settle in with a glass of wine, discover something new through a tasting or pick up a bottle to bring home as a reminder of your time in Stowe. It's a wonderful way to unwind after a day of shopping, sightseeing and discovering the village's local favorites.

Find One More View Worth Stopping For

Before wrapping up your day, take a short walk up Mountain Road to Tangerine & Olive. This charming boutique features thoughtfully curated gifts, apparel, accessories and goods from independent makers, including plenty of Stowe-inspired finds.

But there's another reason to make the trip. Just outside the shop, you'll find one of the most iconic views of Stowe Community Church, with its white steeple framed by the surrounding village and mountains. It's a favorite photo opportunity and a beautiful way to capture your visit to Stowe.

Have More Time? Explore the Recreation Path

If you have a little extra time, consider extending your village adventure onto the Stowe Recreation Path. Beginning just off Main Street, the paved 5.3-mile path follows the West Branch of the Little River through scenic fields, wooded areas and beautiful mountain landscapes.

Rent a bike and explore a section of the path, or simply enjoy a leisurely walk before heading out. It's an easy way to add a little outdoor adventure to your village visit, with scenery that changes throughout all four seasons. The Recreation Path also provides easy access to even more local shops, restaurants and businesses along Mountain Road, giving you plenty of reasons to venture beyond the village.
