Things to do this month

May in Stowe marks the quiet return of spring—and with it, a fresh sense of energy and possibility. Wildflowers begin to bloom, hiking trails open up and the town comes alive as temperatures begin to rise.

Fresh Finds and Local Flavor Every Sunday

The beloved Stowe Farmers’ Market returns this month on Sundays, starting May 11, 2025—offering local produce, fresh baked goods, handmade crafts and the first harvests of the season. The farmers' market is a great way to support local vendors in addition to shopping local when you're in Stowe.

Step Into Stowe’s Spring Hiking Season

After all the snow melts and the trails begin to dry out, hiking is a favorite way to enjoy the warmer weather. Be sure to respect any trail closures to help protect the softening landscape. Popular spring hikes include Moss Glen Falls, Bingham Falls and Sterling Pond.

The scenic byway (section of Route 108) through Smugglers' Notch typically reopens to vehicle traffic in May, depending on the weather. Trails such as Sterling Pond are only accessible when the road is open for the summer. If the road is still closed during your visit, be sure to experience the scenic views at Barnes Camp Boardwalk, located right before the road closure on Route 108.

Make the Most of Memorial Day in Stowe

Memorial Day Weekend often marks the unofficial start of summer in Stowe, with scenic drives, waterfall hikes and early-season paddling all back on the agenda. It’s also when the Auto Toll Road at Stowe Mountain Resort typically opens, offering an iconic drive to the summit ridge with sweeping views of the Green Mountains and Lake Champlain. The holiday weekend is often busier than usual, so be sure to extend your stay into the week to enjoy fewer crowds.
