Leave No Trace

Stowe's trails, forests and natural spaces are here for everyone to enjoy, and small choices can make a big difference in protecting them. Following Leave No Trace principles helps minimize your impact while enjoying the outdoors and preserves these special places for the people and wildlife who depend on them.

Leave No Trace

Leave No Trace provides a simple framework for enjoying the outdoors while minimizing your impact on the environment. By making thoughtful choices while exploring, from staying on designated trails to properly disposing of trash, we can all play a role in protecting Stowe's natural spaces and keeping them healthy for years to come.

Stay on Marked Trails

Stick to designated trails and established paths whenever possible. Going off trail can damage vegetation, contribute to erosion and disturb sensitive natural areas. If a trail is closed or conditions are particularly muddy, choose another place to explore.

Pack Out What You Pack In

Anything you bring with you should leave with you, including food wrappers, containers and other waste. If trash or recycling receptacles aren't available, carry your waste out until you find an appropriate place to dispose of it.

Respect Wildlife

Enjoy wildlife from a safe distance and never approach, follow or feed wild animals. Giving wildlife plenty of space helps protect both you and the animals that call the area home.

Leave What You Find

Rocks, plants, flowers and other natural objects are part of the environment you're exploring. Leave them where you find them so others can enjoy the same experience.

Be a Responsible Pet Owner

Know the rules for pets before heading out, as requirements can vary by trail and property. Keep dogs under control, prevent them from approaching wildlife or other visitors, and always pick up and properly dispose of pet waste.

Be Considerate of Others

Share trails and outdoor spaces respectfully. Keep noise to a reasonable level, give others room to pass and follow posted trail guidelines so everyone can enjoy their time outdoors.

Check trail conditions before you head out. Wet and muddy trails are more vulnerable to damage, so if conditions aren't ideal, consider choosing a more durable trail or saving your hike for another day.
