Join Bear Pond Books in Stowe, Vermont for an author event on August 1st from 1pm to 3pm with Steve Rand signing his book, A Mother's Prayer.
About the Book:
A Mother's Prayer is a striking memoir about an ordinary woman doing extraordinary things, persisting for the sake of her family, mainly her three children. Steve's mother, Anne, asserted her newfound womanhood while confronting a deadly disease. She battled cancer for thirteen years while raising three children and working three low-wage jobs. During the last four years of her life, she was a single mother after her husband fled New York to live in California with another woman.
Anne's family begged her to return to Vermont. She refused, believing a return home represented failure if she could not overcome a deadly disease on her own while raising three children.
In her weakest moments, as her illness persisted, Anne mourned the loss of her beauty and the touch of a lover, claiming, "No man wants this body." In her bravest moments, she wore bikinis at public swimming pools, scars exposed, her body a reminder that we all suffer.
About the Author:
Steve Rand has traveled extensively with students throughout his career. One of his favorite places on the planet is Rwanda, Africa.
Travel writing excerpt, first morning in Africa. I woke as the sun rose over the wall surrounding the backyard of a home on a hill in Kigali, Rwanda in East Africa. I sat on a porch with a roof, admiring the orange-yellow-blue hue of dawn while drinking delicious Rwandan coffee for the first time. I smirked as I recalled what a dear friend once proclaimed, "You can judge a country by its coffee, wine, and ice cream." When I pointed out that many countries don't make their own ice cream, or wine for that matter, he said, "Well, that's a country not worth going to." I think he would have liked Rwanda. Its coffee made up for the fact it lacked vineyards and freezers.
