About Stowe
FAQs
Where is Stowe, Vermont?
We are located in north-central Vermont near Mount Mansfield in the Green Mountains. The destination includes the historic village, Mountain Road, surrounding recreation areas, and Stowe Mountain Resort.
What is Stowe known for?
We are known for mountain scenery, skiing, outdoor recreation, fall foliage, historic New England character, covered bridges, craft beverages, local dining, arts, and year-round events. Stowe is also home to Mount Mansfield, Vermont’s highest peak.
Is Stowe only a ski town?
No. Although we are widely associated with skiing and winter recreation, Stowe is a four-season destination. We welcome visitors for hiking, biking, scenic drives, golf, waterfalls, arts, dining, shopping, wellness, festivals, and family activities throughout the year.
What is the closest major airport to Stowe?
Burlington International Airport is the nearest major airport and is approximately a 40-minute drive from Stowe under typical conditions. We recommend arranging a rental car, taxi, or prearranged transportation before arriving.
Can I reach Stowe by train or bus?
Yes. Train and intercity bus services are available to Waterbury, Vermont, approximately 15 minutes from Stowe. We recommend arranging onward transportation from Waterbury and verifying schedules directly with the transportation provider.
Do I need a car when visiting Stowe?
A car provides the greatest flexibility, particularly for exploring attractions outside the village and Mountain Road. However, parts of Stowe are walkable and bikeable, and our 5.3-mile paved Stowe Recreation Path connects the village with numerous restaurants, shops, and lodging properties. Seasonal taxi and shuttle options are also available.
Is there public transportation in Stowe during winter?
Stowe typically offers a complimentary winter Mountain Road Shuttle through Green Mountain Transit, connecting locations around town with Stowe Mountain Resort and Spruce Peak. The operating season, route, and frequency change annually, so we recommend checking the current schedule before traveling.
Is public parking available in Stowe Village?
Yes. We offer public parking along portions of Main Street and Depot Street and in designated lots around the village. Additional public parking is available in other areas of town, including locations near the Stowe Recreation Path. We ask visitors to follow all posted limits and restrictions.
Is Stowe walkable?
Yes. Our historic village and portions of Mountain Road have sidewalks, and the Stowe Recreation Path offers a paved route between the village and many businesses along Mountain Road. You may still need a vehicle or local transportation for mountain attractions and destinations farther from the central area.
