Wide Tires, Big Smiles, All Winter Long

Much like mountain bikes, fat bikes differ in that they feature wide tires, which make it easier to pedal across snow, effectively adapting the activity into an all-season endeavor. With Stowe's expansive, world-class trail network, fat biking connects you directly from the trails to the historic village, local bike shops and favorite après haunts, just like in the summertime.

While snow and biking might not seem like a natural pair to some, fat biking is a great alternative for those who crave the thrill the slopes, as the best fat biking conditions often come when skiing and riding conditions are not at their peak. It is also a great beginner's adventure, because, as they say, it's just like riding a bike. Some fat bikes come with pedal-assist, making it supportive of varying degrees of ability. There are also many beginner-friendly trails, such as the Stowe Recreation Path, where people can try fat biking on an accessible grade rather than steeper mountain biking trails.

Where to Ride

Many trails in the area are easy and free to access and offer great riding conditions with regular maintenance by local volunteers. Local trails include: The Stowe Recreation Path, Edson Hill (motorized grooming), Cotton Brook, as well as other VAST trails on state forest land, Callaghy’s Trail and Split Rock in Sterling Forest and Cady Hill Forest. Please note, fat biking is not permitted on Adam’s Camp trails. Be sure to check trail conditions and learn more about the trails from Stowe Trails Partnership.

The Lamoille Valley Rail Trail (LVRT) is a 93-mile long rail trail, the longest in New England, that serves as a four-season, multi-purpose recreation and transportation corridor. The trail features accessible grades and is a great place to try fat biking. Take a tour or rent bikes with Lamoille Valley E-Bikes.
