In Their Elements - Works by Susan Bull Riley
Date
The Bryan Fine Art Gallery is thrilled to welcome the work of Susan Bull Riley to the Gallery from July 2 – August 31.
“In Their Elements” began a year ago, with the discovery of a collection of vintage nautical charts in a family cabin in Maine. On a whim, Ms. Riley painted a few birds directly onto the charts with successful results. When she’d used up the charts, and was clearly not finished with this project, she discovered a resource for quality prints of vintage land and topographical maps. By now she was smitten, delving into painting birds and other wildlife that made their habitat in the regions depicted by the vintage maps.
Bull Riley has been painting birds of all species since she was a young girl. She was hired as one of only 10 artists to illustrate the 2008 New York State Breeding Bird Atlas – the only atlas created with fine art rather than photos. She is currently part of a group of 6 artists presenting a traveling exhibit of works featuring endangered birds of the Amboseli National Park in Kenya. Opening in August at the Highland Center for the Arts in Greensboro, the exhibit is presented in conjunction with a book about the park, created by the Biological Diversity Institute in Portland, Maine.
A self-professed, “bird lover, although not an Ornithologist,” Ms. Riley’s exhibit is a first in our Stowe location. The collection on display will include those original first paintings onto nautical charts, along with other newer pieces on vintage New England maps.
An opening reception and meet-greet with the artist will be held on Saturday, July 5, from 1 – 3 pm at 64 Main Street in Stowe Village.
The reception is free and open to the public.
